September is here, which means that students across the country are preparing to return to (or set out for) university. To many this can seem like a daunting ordeal, but here at Taylor & Emmet LLP we employ many people who have been there and experienced it. With law becoming one of the most popular degrees we decided to ask some of our staff about their different experiences in studying this varied and exciting subject.

Degree Title: LLB (Hons)

University: Nottingham Trent

 Job Title: Solicitor

How long have you worked for T&E?

Five years

Why did you choose to study law?

At the time I was unsure of which career path to follow, and believed it would give me options once I obtained the degree.

What was it like to study law?

At times, it was lonely. I spent many hours surrounded by case-law and legal texts, but I made many friends on my degree course who I still see regularly and who I consider some of my best and oldest friends.

What advice would you give to new law students?

Read as much as you can, the only way to understand the language is to immerse yourself in it. Don’t expect to understand it straight away, you will get there!

Did you always want a career in law?

I never had a fixed idea about the type of career I wanted after university, but I am very glad that I have a rewarding career in the law.

Is law the career you thought it would be?

In some ways, yes it is. However, when I speak to more experienced members of the profession I sometimes wish I had practiced it 30 years ago.

What are the benefits of a career in law?

Understanding the law gives you the confidence to easily deal with any administrative challenge, from a mortgage application to a tax return. From speaking to friends in other jobs, I see first-hand how tasks such as these can be daunting to many people.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

The people I work with and the varied challenges clients present me with on a daily basis. It is never dull!

What is your chosen discipline, and why do you enjoy it?

I previously worked at a small local firm.  I wanted to continue to work in City, and I was aware of T&E’s excellent reputation around Sheffield.
