On Saturday (April 17 2021) various organisations with an interest in empty homes are coming together to hold a Day of Action. The aim is to raise public awareness of the housing crisis faced by the UK.
Right now, there are 100,000 families across the country living in temporary accommodation and, according to government data, nearly 270,000 long-term empty homes. It is very easy to see why we must work together to return as many of these properties to a habitable state as possible.
Action stations
The Empty Homes Day of Action is being organised by Action on Empty Homes and will include an online rally and various photoshoots at derelict buildings and developments that do not contain social housing, etc. It intends to highlight three current housing issues:
1. The health impacts of temporary housing and overcrowding, exacerbated by the pandemic.
2. The wrong type of housing being built in metropolitan areas.
3. The affordability crisis.
We wholeheartedly support this positive action and the efforts being made by campaigners to address the community blight of long-term empty homes. We work closely with local authority practitioners across the country, who are dedicated to bringing derelict buildings back into use and see first-hand the struggles they have to locate owners, enforce refurbishment or take a property back into council ownership so it can be repurposed.
