September is here, which means that students across the country are preparing to return to (or set out for) university. To many this can seem like a daunting ordeal, but here at Taylor & Emmet LLP we employ many people who have been there and experienced it. With law becoming one of the most popular degrees we decided to ask some of our staff about their different experiences in studying this varied and exciting subject.

How long have you worked for T&E?
30 years and 8 months.
Why did you choose to study law?
I had decided that I wanted to be a Solicitor at the age of 16. A law degree was the quickest route to what I understood would be an interesting and well-paid job.
What was it like to study law?
Four years of hard work (which was often tedious and very difficult.) The end result was worth it.
What advice would you give to new law students?
Work hard, be well-organised and efficient. If you don’t have them already, develop good communication skills. Make sure you obtain a 2:1 and start developing relationships with legal firms who might employ you from the start of your studies. Finding a training contract will be very difficult.
Did you always want a career in law?
Yes
Is law the career you thought it would be?
Yes, but I didn’t think that I’d have to work such long hours as I do now.
What are the benefits of a career in law?
Job satisfaction from working in a field of law that challenges me every day and which I enjoy, being a naturally competitive person. I also enjoy the financial rewards.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Winning difficult cases and exceeding clients’ expectations.
What is your chosen discipline, and why do you enjoy it?
Personal Injury – I am by nature competitive and enjoy winning cases whilst helping clients at the same time. I also enjoy meeting a wide range of people from different backgrounds and learning about medical matters as part of my job.
Best experience at university?
Spending a week in Oxford after my final exams and really enjoying the City without having to worry about studying.

Because it was a successful firm with a good reputation in Sheffield for providing a very professional, efficient and client-friendly service.
