We spend a significant amount of our lives at work and for the most it can be a pleasant and enjoyable period. However, what happens when you are subject to bullying or mismanagement which results in you suffering from work related stress. This is discussed in more detail below.
Work related stress is such an emotive subject as not only affects your work life, but it also has a significant impact on your home life too. It feels like there is no escape from the upset it causes. That feeling of dread when waking in a morning ready for the day at work, or not being able to sleep at all for the fear of work. The absolute hopelessness of being stuck in a situation that you feel you cannot get out of which means that you cannot enjoy your home life and downtime. No one should be made to feel like that.

Financial Pressures
In the current climate most of us are living with worries about the future especially financial issues. Therefore, when put under undue pressure at work or being subject to bullying you may feel worried about raising issues with your employer. However, you must ensure you look after your mental and physical health both for yourself and your family.
Bullying and undue pressure at work can take many different forms including being given more work or shorter deadlines than other staff members, being forced to do overtime when others aren’t as well as not being offered it at all, name calling/verbal abuse, being left out/ignored deliberately by colleagues, being subject to physical abuse or sexual harassment. There are too many examples to list here, these are just a few of the more common ones.
As hard as it may be the first thing you need to do is speak to a Manager, HR or someone senior to formally put things on record. There is a possibility that they aren’t aware what is happening and taking this first step can help to resolve the issues. If nothing changes after you have made the relevant people aware of the situation, then you are able to take further action against your employer.
It is also important that you see your GP and explain the situation to them. GP’s can help in a multitude of ways from giving you coping strategies, to providing medication or referring for therapy. They can also give ‘Fit to Work’ notes if required.
Stress at Works Claims
Stress at work claims are difficult, but you can help by putting your employer on notice and contacting your GP to talk about it.
As well as assisting you with a personal injury claim for stress at work, we will work together with our excellent employment law team to protect your employment rights during the process.
Please don’t suffer in silence, the situation rarely changes without intervention. Continuing to work in such environments will only lead to a decline in your mental and physical health. The sooner you speak to your GP, and raise an issue with your employer, the better.
