The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has published a security report providing best practice on how to avoid eight common IT security vulnerabilities that most frequently lead to data security breaches. This checklist highlights the key legal obligations that a business should consider when dealing with personal data about customers, suppliers, employees or any other individual who may be encountered during the course of business.
Following six months of discussions with the ICO, the Direct Marketing Association (DMA) has issued new guidelines clarifying how the ICO defines one-to-one marketing and interprets rules relating to consumer consent. The DMA’s new guidelines clarify the ICO’s approach on, among other things, the rules for obtaining consumer consent (including for marketing by third parties), whether it is ever possible to use pre-ticked opt-in boxes, and whether unlimited third party consent is ever valid.
A checklist highlights the key data protection issues a business should consider when carrying out direct marketing is available on request. It explains how customer information should be collected and how product information should be communicated to existing customers.
