As the Festive Season is in full swing and before our Personal Injury team’s Christmas meal tonight, I thought I’d advise, free of charge, of ten ways to avoid being injured at Christmas:
1. Road Traffic Accidents
Don’t drive, cycle, skateboard, hoverboard or ride any other type of vehicle on roads or pavements whilst under the influence of drink, drugs, over-eating or tiredness. Watch out for others who might be doing this!
2. Product Liability Claims
Check the wiring on your Xmas tree lights before you switch them on. If there is any exposed wiring – buy another set.
3. Tripping and Slipping Cases
Walk around carefully, checking what is on the ground in front of you. Pay particular attention to snow, ice, discarded party hats and inebriated office staff.
4. Food poisoning
Don’t be tempted to try and eat raw turkey – even for a bet.
5. Lifting accidents
Only carry one case of beer or wine at a time and use correct lifting techniques – ie – lift with a straight back.
6. Sports injuries
Keep well clear of people trying to play darts in the local pub after their office party
7. Work at height injuries
When dressing the office Christmas tree, use stepladders for the upper branches and don’t try climbing on shelves or revolving chairs.
8. Defective work equipment
No matter how quickly you want to open the Christmas presents from your colleague/boss, don’t use the guillotine, a Stanley knife or a box cutter to do so.
9. Occupier’s liability claims
Resist the temptation to dance on top of chairs, tables, desks and statues.
10. Criminal Injury claims
Don’t kiss anyone under the mistletoe if they have a violent and jealous partner or spouse
I do hope that you have an excellent Christmas and New Year and don’t come to any harm. I’m looking forward to good beer, curry and company tonight.
Jonathan
