A High Court judge has condemned a husband for deliberately attempting to prevent his wife from accessing legal advice during their multi-million-pound divorce proceedings.
In a ruling handed down this month, Mr Justice Cobb found that the man had taken “specific and deliberate” steps to isolate his former partner from her solicitor, in what the court described as a bid to pressure her into accepting an unfair financial settlement.
The couple, who remain unnamed for legal reasons, were involved in a divorce that centred on assets worth hundreds of millions of pounds. The final settlement awarded the wife £230 million.
Court Concern Over ‘Coercive’ Tactics
The judgment revealed that the husband made several efforts to “undermine” the wife’s access to independent legal advice, including discouraging her from continuing her professional relationship with her solicitor.
Mr Justice Cobb expressed concern about the “controlling and coercive” nature of the husband’s behaviour. The court found that his actions had the potential to create a “significant imbalance of power” and that the wife had been placed under “considerable emotional pressure” during the process.
“This case serves as a stark reminder that both parties in family proceedings must have unfettered access to independent legal advice,” the judge said.
Legal Experts Warn Against Undue Influence
Family law professionals say the case highlights the importance of ensuring both parties are able to make informed decisions, particularly when complex financial arrangements are involved.
Michaela Evans, Head of Family Law at Taylor Emmet said “Any attempt to isolate someone from legal support is deeply concerning. Courts take a dim view of such conduct, especially where significant assets are at stake. Financial settlements reached without proper legal advice can later be challenged and potentially set aside.”

The case has drawn attention to broader issues in family law, including the need for transparency and fairness during divorce. Lawyers stress that individuals should never feel pressured into signing financial agreements without full understanding of their rights.
“It’s not just about high-net-worth cases,” Michaela added. “Anyone going through a divorce, whether they’re dividing up millions or modest assets, should feel empowered to seek legal advice without interference.”
