Humberside Police are currently in the very early stages of the investigation into the death of cardiac patients at Castle Hill Hospital. This comes after concerns were raised about the deaths of 11 patients following a transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI).
What is a Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI)
A Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) is a minimally invasive procedure to replace a damaged aortic valve. According to NHS guidance the procedure usually more suitable for patients who are too frail or are too high-risk to have a conventional valve replacement.
Concerns of Care
The BBC have reported, in their recent article, that several concerns were reported by the hospital staff to the hospital management. This resulted in the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) assessing the cardiology department at Castle Hill Hospital including two patient deaths following a TAVI procedure. The RCP concluded that one patient’s care was “graded poor” and “unfortunately resulted in an avoidable vascular complication”.
The BBC also highlighted that seven cardiac consultants expressed that they were “very concerned about the safety and transparency of the TAVI service” in a letter to the hospital’s chief executive.
