Accidents leading to injury occur most commonly on the roads, footpaths and at work. However our Personal Injury teams frequently represent people who have been injured in other places. Here are the top 10:
Supermarkets
We see plenty of claims from people who have been injured at their local store. Usually they have slipped on liquid or produce on the shop floor which has been dropped or spilled by staff and customers. Other hazards to look out for are packaging and baskets which have caused serious injuries to clients. In a dramatic case, a child was lucky to escape serious injury when a display stack of drinks (fortunately in plastic bottles) fell on him while shopping with his parents.
Aeroplanes
In quick succession, we acted for three people who were all scalded by hot drinks spilled on them by cabin crew members. All the claims succeeded.
Amateur dramatic stages
I have personally acted for a local woman who was injured when the steps she was supposed to be using for a dramatic entrance had been moved during a performance, leading to her falling from the stage. Another, suffered a fracture when their foot became trapped on defective stairs leading down from the stage.
Building sites
People living on partly-completed sites should take extra care as the contractors do not always tidy up as they should. I recall claims for a client who fell due to a kerbstone that had not been cemented in place and another who was injured when they stepped in a dangerous hole in the middle of a newly-laid footpath.
Night clubs
These places constantly result in injury. Recent cases include a man who suffered a serious fall due to water that had leaked all over the WC floor, a woman who suffered a fractured elbow when she slipped on drinks on a dance floor, a young lady who thankfully only suffered minor injuries when a wall-mounted speaker fell onto her head and a man who was wrongly assaulted by doormen.
Hairdressers and beauty salons
Designed to make people look their best, these places sometimes have quite the opposite effect. Scalded scalps due to negligent bleaching are common. I have acted for a woman who fell over hairdryer wires and one who lost her eyebrows forever after a tinting and waxing treatment went wrong.
Sports pitches
Astroturf pitches are meant to ensure that games go ahead in all conditions. However when not maintained they can cause trips and falls, resulting in fractures and breaks.
Restaurants
Whilst food poisoning cases are well-known, we have recently acted for clients who suffered fractures due to over-polished floors, slippery tiles in a WC, food left on the floor and, in two cases, defective chairs.
Hotels
Whether used for business or pleasure, they occasionally become defendants in personal injury claims. We have claimed for clients who were scalded by overheated towel rails, injured due to wet bathroom floors and over-polished decking, and poisoned by badly-prepared food.
GP surgeries
Normally, patients go to see the doctor to be treated for injuries, not expecting to sustain them. A client who was going for a routine appointment fell down stairs at the front entrance, suffering a complex foot and ankle fracture. Another client fell in an icy car park that had not been gritted. This resulted in a trip to the hospital with fractures to her tibia and fibula.
