As summer draws to a close, and the weather gradually becomes colder there is an increased risk to road users and pedestrians. Breakdowns are common during the winter months and road conditions can present several different challenges to road users. Statistics released by the Department for Transport revealed that 29 fatalities and 2,500 injuries were linked to snow and ice on Great Britain’s roads.

How can I decrease my chances of having an accident?

Make sure your car is clean

We would advise you to check your windscreen washers and wiper blades regularly. Failure to take this step can cause marks to be left on the windscreen which may obscure your view whilst driving. We also advise readers to clean their lights and number plates. Rule 229 of the Highway Code also states that a driver must ensure that lights are clean and number plates are clearly visible and legible. The Police have the power to fine drivers who do not follow this rule.

Stock up on Antifreeze

You may regret it if you don’t. Antifreeze is relatively cheap to purchase, and it’s better to incur the cost now, rather than spending hundreds of pounds on repair costs.

Check your tyres

The AA recommends at least 3mm of tread during the winter months. They also advise that you shouldn’t let the air out of them to increase the grip, instead investing in all-weather tyres, to cope with a wider range of weather conditions.

Accelerate and decelerate slowly

Don’t set off too quickly at junctions, and take time to slow down when approaching them!

Keep a safe distance from the car in front

Always keep a safe distance from the car in front of you, so that you can apply your brakes gradually.

Be prepared

Allow extra time to get to your destination. Get up a bit earlier to allow time to de-ice your car and allow a lot longer for journeys.
