Latest statistics show continued dramatic drop in number of Tribunal claims

Employment Tribunal statistics for the first quarter of 2014 have been published today.  In light of the introduction of Employment Tribunal fees last year, these statistics have been eagerly awaited.

You may recall from our previous blog that the statistics for the period from October to December 2013 showed a marked reduction in claims that were received by the Tribunal system (in fact, representing a 79% drop in claims (from 50,000 to just 9,801), which made rather depressing reading for prospective Claimants and their advisers (but which may have caused some sense of relief for hard pressed employers).  The statistics for January to March 2014 show a steady rise in claims since last September but still demonstrate a substantial reduction year on year – there were 5,619 single claims lodged during this period compared with 13,491 for the same period last year.  This is a drop in claims from the 2013 figures of 58%. This drop may well give encouragement to Unison in their judicial review litigation against the introduction of Tribunal fees, which is going to the Court of Appeal. 

Other points which may be of interest are that 35,288 claims were “disposed of” during this quarter, which is a 27% increase on the same period in 2013.  Of the subjects most commonly complained of, 37% related to working time, 19% to unfair dismissal, 10% for equal pay and 8% for discrimination.

The average time to reach conclusion (receipt of the final written judgment) is 34 weeks from the case’s inception for single claims, and it is envisaged this will further decrease over the coming 12 months.
