\"camillaa_2015\"<\/a>September is here, which means that students across the country are preparing to return to (or set out for) university. To many this can seem like a daunting ordeal, but here at Taylor & Emmet LLP we employ many people who have been there and experienced it. With law becoming one of the most popular degrees we decided to ask some of our staff about their different experiences in studying this varied and exciting subject.<\/p>\n

How long have you worked for T&E?<\/strong><\/p>\n

2 and-a-half years<\/p>\n

Why did you choose to study law?<\/strong><\/p>\n

When I was considering my options I thought it would be a professional, well-respected job with good career progression.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What was it like to study law? <\/strong><\/p>\n

I did the Graduate Diploma in Law Course at BPP Law School in London in one year while working two jobs to help fund the course. It was intense, but it got me to where I need to be.<\/p>\n

What advice would you give to new law students?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>Make sure you get a Training Contract before committing to the Legal Practice Course. It is an extremely competitive market for Training Contracts at present and the course itself is very expensive. I would suggest that to avoid excessive debt it would be a good idea to get a Training Contract before you begin to study and if that isn\u2019t possible then try your best to find a Paralegal role to gain experience while you are applying for Training Contract positions.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>Did you always want a career in law?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>I considered a career in insurance broking because I enjoy meeting people, negotiating and I find it easy to analyse information. I took time to get work experience and internships in a number of different companies and law firms before I committed to law.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>Is law the career you thought it would be?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A career in the law is much broader than you might initially think. There are many types of law firms and areas within the profession that make it a diverse industry. It means that there are different types of law firms that suit different types of lawyer, for example smaller local law firms compared to large multinational corporate firms.<\/p>\n

What are the benefits of a career in law? <\/strong><\/p>\n

There is a clear career progression within most firms and you can work in the UK and abroad.<\/p>\n

What do you enjoy most about your job?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I enjoy reading expert evidence and working out if there is a potential case. Particularly in clinical negligence no two cases are the same and I constantly have to apply both the test in law and relevant case law.<\/p>\n

What is your chosen discipline, and why do you enjoy it?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Clinical negligence is interesting from both a medical and legal perspective. Assisting clients through a difficult period in their lives and helping them discover what happened to their loved ones, or to them is a rewarding service to provide. Clients often find that the experts we instruct provide them with information and answers that they previously did not know or understand and it helps to provide closure.<\/p>\n

Best experience at university?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The freedom to study your chosen subject, the social aspect and having so much time to do what you want, exactly when you wanted to!<\/p>\n

And finally, why did you choose to work for T&E?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I wanted to work in an established traditional law firm that had been in the area for a long time and had a good client base and reputation. Taylor&Emmet has been in South Yorkshire for over 130 years and is a strong firm renowned for being friendly and professional, so the choice was simple!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
