It\u2019s not something many people think about, but what happens to a State Pension when someone dies can cause confusion and, in some cases, unexpected issues for families and executors.<\/h4>\n

The key point to remember is that the State Pension usually ends on death. However, there are a few important exceptions and practical steps that are worth knowing about.<\/p>\n

Does the State Pension stop immediately?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Yes. If the State Pension is already in payment, then it normally stops at the end of the week in which the person dies. Any payments made after death will usually need to be repaid to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).<\/p>\n

This is why it\u2019s important to notify the DWP as soon as possible after a death. \u00a0It can often take several months for the DWP to calculate any overpayment and to decide if they do intend to recover any overpaid monies from the estate.<\/p>\n

This can sometimes cause problems when any overpayment is recovered after the estate has already been distributed to the beneficiaries.<\/p>\n
