Unfortunately antibiotics have often been over-prescribed, especially in developing nations and this, together with the increased use of antibiotics in agriculture, has led to a situation where antibiotics are now becoming less effective at fighting the infections they are produced to treat, and with this comes the threat of antibiotic resistance. Fewer antibiotics are now being developed. It is nearly 30 years since a new class of antibiotic was introduced into mainstream medicine. Many pharmaceutical companies are pulling out of antibiotic research due to spiralling research costs, and as a consequence the World Health Organisation has repeatedly warned that the world is heading towards a “post-antibiotic era”. Formerly common infections such as tuberculosis, typhoid and diphtheria could once again become killers. Frighteningly, antibiotic-resistant TB has now been reported in 92 countries. Scientists have warned that drug-resistant microbes could kill 10 million people per year by 2050, and the economic cost could run into $100 trillion in lost economic output. Such catastrophic financial losses worldwide would far overshadow losses sustained during the recent banking crisis. As such, many western countries now have a national plan for dealing with rising levels of antibiotic resistance and the World Health Organisation is calling for all countries to restrict their future prescription.

There has recently been a call to the global pharmaceutical industry to pay $2 billion over 5 years towards an innovation fund to kick-start research into finding new antibiotics. Scientists in the UK, Germany and Mexico have recently conducted research and have found a possible way of combatting future drug resistance. They used two commonly prescribed antibiotics and administered them in a specific sequence against the E-coli bug, and by repeating the process numerous times the E-coli was eliminated within 4 days. This research is continuing and it is hoped that the use of already developed antibiotics in a sequenced treatment plan may help in the fight against antimicrobial resistance. Other scientists are researching “resistance breakers”, which are compounds that work to boost the effectiveness of antibiotics already in use, a solution which is far cheaper than attempting to develop new drugs. One such resistance breaker has been developed by Helperby Therapeutics, a company founded by Professor Anthony Coates at St George’s University in London, which acts against the MRSA “superbug”, and will shortly be going into clinical trials in India.

Scientists in America have also discovered 25 potential new antibiotics derived from soil microbes. One of these, teixobactin, is effective against both TB and MRSA. However, teixobactin has yet to undergo patient trials and is ineffective against e-coli and Klebsiella which are responsible for many resistant infections, but according to Professor Kim Lewis co-founder of NovoBiotic Pharmaceuticals, there could be thousands more antibiotics in the soil, yet to be discovered.

Many of our Clients report having nasty infections, particularly following hospital treatment and it is to be hoped that vulnerable people will have sufficient antibiotic protection in the future.

Since the mid-20th Century, antibiotics have revolutionised medical care.
