The most vulnerable road users are children, it is therefore vitally important that this week is used to spread the word to ensure that all road users and pedestrians are as safe as can possibly be.<\/p>\n<h4>How can I protect myself?<\/h4>\n<p>As the dark nights are now here pedestrians and cyclists must ensure that they stand out to road users. Wearing light coloured clothing, reflective if possible, is one small step that can be taken to ensure you are seen. The use of lights on bicycles is also incredibly important.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, teaching children the use of the Green Cross Code is something that all care providers can do. The road is a dangerous place, and the earlier children are taught to use them properly and respect them the lesser the risks they will face.<\/p>\n<p>We often see the after affects of road traffic accidents. Whilst some people are lucky and only suffer minor injuries that they quickly recover from, not everyone is that fortunate. We have dealt with a number of claims for both pedestrians and cyclists where the outcome has been very different.<\/p>\n<p>Some accidents lead to life changing injuries which can and often do include the following: &#8211;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Inability to work or work in the role that was undertaken before<\/li>\n<li>Permanent disability to the body and\/or brain<\/li>\n<li>Requirement for permanent care<\/li>\n<li>The involvement of a Deputy to make financial and medical decisions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some cases sadly are fatalities which has a devastating effect on all parties involved.<\/p>\n<p>Road traffic accidents can be avoided by everyone being sensible, being responsible and looking out for each other.
