{"id":4410,"date":"2017-11-29T10:43:24","date_gmt":"2017-11-29T10:43:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tayloremmet.co.uk\/blog\/wordpress\/?p=2212"},"modified":"2017-11-29T10:43:24","modified_gmt":"2017-11-29T10:43:24","slug":"top-tips-driving-car-winter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tayloremmet.co.uk\/blogs\/top-tips-driving-car-winter\/","title":{"rendered":"Top tips for driving your car in winter."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">As I navigated my car down the steep, narrow streets of Sheffield over the weekend, I attempted a fairly innocuous left turn.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">I then had the bizarre and hair-raising experience of my car sliding sideways, across to the other side of the road and stopping just centimetres from a parked car.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">As I gathered my wits, I realised I had slid over a sheet of ice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">So, as winter grips Britain, and if, as predicted, we are in for a winter of Arctic proportions, how\u00a0should we minimise the risks of an accident?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; color: #003a7a;\"><strong>Checking your car before you go:<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">A decent pair of winter tyres are a pricey investment, but their grip and braking capabilities in cold and icy conditions could be the difference between a near miss and a painful accident.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Check weather forecasts before setting off. If it looks bad, consider whether your journey is really necessary.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Prepare for the worst. Pack a charged mobile phone (and a charger), a bottle of water, a few snacks and a warm blanket. A pen and paper may also be an idea.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">If snowfall looks likely, a set of snow socks \u2013 high-grip fabric covers fitted over the car\u2019s driven wheels.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Completely clear windows and mirrors before you set off.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">If you can alter your cars drive modes, select the best option for cold conditions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif; color: #003a7a;\"><strong>Driving style:<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Look well ahead for potential hazards \u2013 including, of course, patches of ice \u2013 and keep to a low speed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">Accelerate, brake, steer and change gear as smoothly as possible to reduce the risk of a skid.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">A higher gear (like 4th or 5th) may be more appropriate to aid grip on packed ice. This helps control engine power, and makes it easier to find traction.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">If your vehicle does slide, take your foot off the accelerator and turn the steering wheel into to the skid (in the direction that you want to travel). This might seem counter intuitive, but doing so straightens the car and should help you regain control.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">If all of that fails\u2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">It is a legal requirement, that if you have an accident, you must exchange insurance details (name, address, vehicle number plate). If the vehicle is parked, and you can&#8217;t locate the owner, leave a note on their windscreen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">We hope
