Parental alienation occurs when one parent psychologically manipulates a child against the other parent. It can result in the child not wanting to have any sort of relationship with that parent and can have a deep and lasting effect. The issue has recently been the subject of a storyline in the TV drama Doctor Foster.<\/p>\n<p>CAFCASS have been criticised for not taking the problem seriously enough. The charity Families Need Fathers noted that<span style=\"color: #003a7a;\"><a href=\"httpss:\/\/fnf.org.uk\/news-events-2\/press-releases\/150-press-releases-2017-archive\/437-cafcass-taking-parental-alienation-seriously-at-last\"> very few frontline CAFCASS officers had engaged in training <\/a><\/span>on the subject<\/p>\n<p>CAFCASS have confirmed that parental alienation occurs in a significant number of the 125,000 cases it deals with on an annual basis.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003a7a;\"><strong>High Conflict Pathway<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>From Spring 2018 CAFCASS will launch a new scheme called the \u2018High Conflict Pathway\u2019. Sarah Parsons, the assistant director of Cafcass, said: \u201cWe are increasingly recognising that parental alienation is a feature in many of our cases and have realised that it\u2019s absolutely vital that we take the initiative. Our new approach is groundbreaking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CAFCASS have confirmed that it has developed a 12-week intense programme called \u2018Positive Parenting\u2019 which is designed to help the abusive parent put themselves in their child\u2019s position, and give them skills to break their patterns of behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>A trial of it will start shortly, with 50 high-conflict families being sought across the country. After an evaluation in spring, the programme will be rolled out nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>CAFCASS officers on the front line will undergo mandatory training on parental alienation. It will not be a \u2018one size fits all\u2019 as it is recognised that there are degrees of alienation. Each case will be classified as mild, moderate or severe and an appropriate response will be developed for each classification.<\/p>\n<p>The intervention offered will depend on each case and will include therapy to help the \u2018target parent\u2019 to address their behaviour and recognise the impact on the child. In the most extreme cases CAFCASS will recommend that the child should live with the \u2018alienated\u2019 parent.
