{"id":3533,"date":"2021-10-21T09:40:23","date_gmt":"2021-10-21T08:40:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tayloremmet.co.uk\/blogs\/?p=3533"},"modified":"2021-10-21T09:40:23","modified_gmt":"2021-10-21T08:40:23","slug":"nhs-englands-interim-report-into-care-provided-by-mr-daniel-hay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tayloremmet.co.uk\/blogs\/nhs-englands-interim-report-into-care-provided-by-mr-daniel-hay\/","title":{"rendered":"NHS England&#8217;s interim report into the care provided by Mr Daniel Hay"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mr Daniel Hay has been named as the surgeon under investigation by the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust and NHS England in relation to care provided to hundreds of women between 2015 and 2018 prior to his retirement in July 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Many of Mr Hay\u2019s former patients have raised concerns about the substandard consent process they underwent prior to their major surgeries which included sterilisations, ovary removal, ovarian cyst operations, prolapse repairs and hysterectomies.<\/p>\n<p>Many women who have been treated by Mr Hay have suffered serious and lifechanging injuries, including menorrhagia (abnormally heavy periods), dysmenorrhea (painful periods), chronic muscular pain and mental health issues. Lots of women have also been rendered infertile and have needed to go into early menopause to reduce the bleeding and pain associated with their injuries.<\/p>\n<p>NHS England, the body which oversees the clinical care provided by the NHS, has commissioned an <span style=\"color: #003a7a;\"><a style=\"color: #003a7a;\" href=\"httpss:\/\/www.uhdb.nhs.uk\/download.cfm?doc=docm93jijm4n17606.pdf&amp;ver=43818\">interim report into the work of Mr Hay which was published in February 2021<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The anonymous report follows an independent review of the medical notes relating to 383 women who have been given the opportunity to share their views about the treatment they received from Mr Hay. A Gynaecologist from the Trust, Mr Mike Cust, has been tasked with speaking to all women affected before publishing a full report in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Magnus Harris, Executive Medical Director at the Trust, has made a full and unreserved apology to all women who have been identified as being harmed.<\/p>\n<p>The interim report cites several deficiencies in the care provided by Mr Hay which included:-<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Inadequate record keeping and surgical notes<\/li>\n<li>No or inadequate exploration of patient symptoms and their significance<\/li>\n<li>No or inadequate clinical examination<\/li>\n<li>Critical information not being considered in decision making<\/li>\n<li>Insufficient information provided to patients during the consent process<\/li>\n<li>Lack of less invasive alternatives discussed and offered<\/li>\n<li>No rationale for clinical and surgical decisions made<\/li>\n<li>Unnecessary and\/or avoidable operations<\/li>\n<li>Inadequate communication to GPs<\/li>\n<li>Unrealistic entries into the surgical booking system<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The catalogue of errors allegedly committed by Mr Hay mean that sadly, specialist clinical negligence lawyers consider that the number of women coming forward will continue to rise as the inquiry into his practice continues.<\/p>\n<p>Our Clinical Negligence team are determined to seek the best possible outcome for our clients who have been injured as a result of Mr Hay\u2019s substandard care and consider that patient safety should always come first.
