The theme is \u201cNo Need to Speed\u201d following findings that only a quarter of people think vehicles travel at a safe speed on the streets where they live.<\/p>\n<p>RSW2020 is coordinated by the road safety charity Brake and the aim is to encourage everyone to be aware of the speed of vehicles and how that impacts on their safety. Brake\u2019s vision is a world with zero road deaths or serious injuries, where everyone drives in a safe and healthy way as part of our normal day.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (ROSPA), in 2019 there were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1752 road deaths \u2013 approx. 5 people killed everyday<\/li>\n<li>25,945 serious injuries<\/li>\n<li>153,158 casualties of all severities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As Personal Injury Lawyers, helping victims of road traffic accidents, we know first-hand how speed is a significant factor in many of the cases we see. A difference of just a few mph can make the difference between life and death.<\/p>\n<p>According to ROSPA, inappropriate speed contributes to around<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>11% of all injury collisions reported to the police<\/li>\n<li>15% of crashes that result in serious injuries<\/li>\n<li>24% of fatal accidents<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Driving at inappropriate speeds isn\u2019t just about driving over the speed limit. It can be applied to driving too fast for the road conditions, i.e. if it is very wet, icy, or foggy. Another important example would be if there happens to be a lot of pedestrians around you should reduce your speed accordingly.<\/p>\n<p>To spread road safety awareness and help educate about the Highway Code the Bike Storage Company have created a fun, interactive online quiz which drivers and cyclists alike will find interesting and helpful.
