Breakdowns are common during the winter months and road conditions can present several different challenges to road users. Statistics released by the Department for Transport revealed that 29 fatalities and 2,500 injuries were linked to snow and ice on\u00a0<span style=\"background-color: var(--color_content_background); color: var(--color_content_text); font-family: var(--typography_fonts_text);\">Great Britain&#8217;s <\/span><span style=\"background-color: var(--color_content_background); color: var(--color_content_text); font-family: var(--typography_fonts_text);\">roads.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #003a7a;\">How can I decrease my chances of having an accident?<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #003a7a;\">Make sure your car is clean<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>We would advise you to check your windscreen washers and wiper blades regularly. Failure to take this step can cause marks to be left on the windscreen which may obscure your view whilst driving. We also advise readers to clean their lights and number plates. Rule 229 of the Highway Code also states that a driver must ensure that lights are clean and number plates are clearly visible and legible. The Police have the power to fine drivers who do not follow this rule.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #003a7a;\">Stock up on Antifreeze<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>You may regret it if you don\u2019t. Antifreeze is relatively cheap to purchase, and it\u2019s better to incur the cost now, rather than spending hundreds of pounds on repair costs.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #003a7a;\">Check your tyres<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The AA recommends at least 3mm of tread during the winter months. They also advise that you shouldn\u2019t let the air out of them to increase the grip, instead investing in all-weather tyres, to cope with a wider range of weather conditions.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #003a7a;\">Accelerate and decelerate slowly<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Don\u2019t set off too quickly at junctions, and take time to slow down when approaching them!<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #003a7a;\">Keep a safe distance from the car in front<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Always keep a safe distance from the car in front of you, so that you can apply your brakes gradually.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #003a7a;\">Be prepared<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Allow extra time to get to your destination.
