Everyone\u2019s reasons for ending a relationship are unique, but our worries about going it alone are remarkably similar.<\/p>\n

If you are having thoughts about separating, it is wise to find out the facts before changing life as you know it irreversibly. Here are my top tips for a dignified divorce.<\/p>\n

Do:<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

Take a deep breath<\/h4>\n

Reflect on your situation and talk through your feelings with friends or family. Make sure you look after yourself \u2013 you need to be in good shape to deal with the months ahead.<\/p>\n

Make a list<\/h4>\n

Before seeing a solicitor, write down your questions, so you can cover everything you wish to discuss. Some clients find this initial meeting very stressful, so it may help to bring a friend for support.<\/p>\n

Focus on your children<\/h4>\n

Put children at the centre of any decisions and you won\u2019t go far wrong. Do you want them to worry about inviting both parents to their wedding?<\/p>\n

Seek legal advice as soon as possible<\/h4>\n

It is important to know where you stand. Make sure you know your rights and responsibilities, as well as the options available to you.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t:<\/span><\/h3>\n

Panic<\/h4>\n

You will be fine. The law is there to ensure both parties\u2019 needs are met and your settlement is fair. Before making any decision, think carefully about whether counselling could help you get back on track.<\/p>\n

Take revenge<\/h4>\n

Cutting up your partner\u2019s clothes may offer momentary satisfaction, but it sends out the wrong message about how you will deal with the separation. As hard as it may be, grit your teeth and take the moral high ground. Remember, those clothes need replacing and where will the money come from?<\/p>\n

Transfer money or try to hide it<\/h4>\n

It does not work and once it becomes apparent what you\u2019ve done, the courts take a very dim view.<\/p>\n

Rely on the legal advice of friends<\/h4>\n
