The condition can cause pain and tenderness in the temples.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">If Giant Cell Arteritis is left untreated, it can become very serious, potentially causing strokes or blindness. Increasing public awareness about Giant Cell Arteritis is essential to prevent people from suffering from the life-long disabilities it can cause.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"color: #003a7a;\"><b>What are the symptoms of Giant Cell Arteritis?<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Symptoms of Giant Cell Arteritis include frequent, very bad headaches, tenderness over the temples, jaw pain and problems with sight.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">It\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">really important<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0that anyone with these symptoms seeks medical help straight away and it should be treated as a medical emergency. An urgent referral to a specialist rheumatologist might be made. According to the NHS website, if you have problems with your vision, you should have a same day appointment with a hospital eye specialist (an ophthalmologist).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"color: #003a7a;\"><b>What are the tests and treatment?<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">After being examined by your doctor you may be referred for tests which may include a blood test, an ultrasound scan of the temples and\/or a biopsy.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Steroids should be prescribed to avoid permanent sight loss. They will slow down the activity of the immune\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">system and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0reduce inflammation in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0blood vessels.
