Mr Anthony Dixon, a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon who pioneered the use of mesh implants to treat rectal prolapse, has been suspended and is being investigated by the NHS.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The consultant carried out surgery at NHS Southmead Hospital and at the private Spire Hospital in Bristol.<\/p>\n

Mr Dixon used a technique known as mesh rectopexy to fix pelvic organ prolapse and incontinence, often caused by childbirth.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, several women treated by Mr Dixon have suffered severe pain and complications following surgery. There are concerns that they were not warned of potential life-altering complications which may arise as a result of surgery. There are also concerns that inappropriate comments were made to some patients.<\/p>\n

Many affected women are now investigating the standard of care provided by Mr Dixon.<\/p>\n

Following Mr Dixon\u2019s suspension, almost 200 bowel surgery patients have been recalled over concerns about the treatment they received.<\/p>\n

North Bristol NHS Trust are undertaking a “thorough review process” of all pelvic floor surgery patients treated at Southmead Hospital, including patients operated on by surgeons other than Mr Dixon.<\/p>\n

Spire Hospital have also advised they have “taken the precautionary decision to invite a select cohort of patients” back to hospital for review.<\/p>\n
