Time to train - Dronfield On-line May 2010

As the recession is technically over, more businesses across the region can stop thinking about crisis management and start planning for a world post-recession.

The workplace may be very different for organisations with fewer employees or staff working less hours for reduced wages. For those still on the payroll, there is the risk of ‘survivor syndrome’ and feelings of de-motivation.

With the economic future remaining uncertain, most businesses will be reluctant to start recruiting again until the green shoots grow into something real. So how do you get more from less? The answer might just lie in training the staff you have to add value to your business and motivate employees in the process.

In particular, front line managers can hold the key to a happy and productive workforce, rather than a de-motivated, distrustful one. From an employment law point of view, many of the issues that can develop into costly disputes, such as discipline, grievance, absence and performance, first come to the attention of a line manager. How that person reacts can make the difference between a problem managed fairly (or even nipped in the bud altogether) and one that escalates into formal proceedings, counter-grievances and at worst, an employment tribunal claim.

At Taylor&Emmet, we recognise the importance of helping our clients prevent disputes before they occur and training is at the core of this ethos.

Our training services – T&E Advance – are being expanded both in scope and in range of topics. We have developed a series of modules covering matters such as how to conduct disciplinary investigations, equal pay, recruitment, health and wellbeing, equality and diversity. These can be tailored to your business and delivered at your premises or at our Dronfield office. We are also running a series of quarterly seminars in Sheffield on the most topical issues facing managers of people.

Finally, I am delighted to announce that we have added another senior solicitor to our team. Jenny Arrowsmith joins us from Eversheds LLP in Leeds and brings with her many years’ experience of delivering training to HR, senior and front line managers from organisations of all sizes. She will now be spreading the word about how Taylor&Emmet’s training can help advance your people and your business.
